There is a note on the back of this drawing that reads 1957 Life Magazine, I assume indicating that it took inspiration from a Life photo, and I would guess done in response to a grade school assignment. In addition to the progression of (heavily rouged!) faces, from straight-on to the 90 degree profile to 3/4 view (and the ultra long arms of the last), I love that they are hierarchically labeled, our empathy landing most with the youngest I think, who looks straight at us, and provokes (in me at least) that youthful feeling of aspiring to advance to the next barre!
