If you want to treat stains on fabrics that cannot be rinsed, such as carpets or sofas, thoroughly dab away the soap residue with a tea towel after the soaking time. Bile soap is not suitable for skin care. Because the firm bar of bile soap is usually free of dyes, fragrances, and preservatives, you often encounter messages on internet forums claiming that bile soap is good for the skin. But can a soap protect the skin from stubborn stains? "I don't think bile soap is suitable for skin care," says Dr. Ernst Tabori, director of the German Advisory Center for Hygiene at the University Hospital of Freiburg (BZH). Bile contains bile acid salts, which primarily promote digestion and emulsify water-insoluble food components, making them water-soluble. Soap disrupts the naturally slightly acidic environment of the skin, as quark soap, for example, has a basic pH of 8.5 to 9.0 and also degreases the skin. If emulsifying bile salts are added to this, skin-friendly cleansing is no longer possible. Bile soap was developed for removing grease and protein stains from textiles and, like bile acid, is not intended for skin care. Therefore, bile soap has not been tested for skin compatibility, as the product is not designed for human skin. Tabori generally advises against experimenting on your own skin to avoid unnecessarily increasing the risk of allergies and skin irritations: "The less skin contact there is, the more natural it is. It's best to cleanse with water and a very mild, pH-neutral product without fragrances, dyes, or preservatives." In an emergency, spitting is a good alternative. If you don't have stain remover on hand in an emergency, you can also use your own spit. This prevents the stain from drying out, and our saliva contains enzymes that can dissolve proteins, fats, and starches. Your own stain remover is particularly effective against blood stains: apply the spit to the stain, let it work for a while, and then rinse with cold water. Never use hot water to clean blood stains, as the proteins in the blood will then coagulate and become difficult to remove from the fabric. What remains is an unsightly brown stain.
