28 Years Later (2025) is the third instalment in the acclaimed post-apocalyptic horror franchise, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. Set nearly three decades after the initial outbreak of the Rage virus, the film follows a young boy named Spike and his mother, Isla, as they attempt to survive in a quarantined Britain now shaped by years of collapse and evolving infected creatures. Their journey brings them into contact with Dr Ian Kelson, played by Ralph Fiennes, whose presence introduces a reflective, emotional dimension centred on love, loss, and mortality. The story explores themes of isolation, endurance, and the fragile persistence of hope in a world defined by devastation.
Boyle returns to the raw visual energy of the original film, employing innovative cinematography using enhanced iPhones to create a gritty, immediate aesthetic. A haunting score by Scottish group Young Fathers deepens the film’s sense of unease and melancholy. The introduction of the provocative and divisive character Jimmy adds an unsettling new dynamic, pushing the world of the series in stranger, more unsettling directions and setting the stage for the follow-up chapter, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
