In this workshop, you’ll get an introduction to stranded colorwork knitting techniques by knitting a pine tree-pattern coffee cozy. Julia will provide the pattern and guide everyone through the basics of the skill, including how to manage more than one strand of yarn at a time, catching “floats,” and color dominance.
The goal is to make the skill feel approachable!
Materials you’ll need:
Two skeins of DK-weight yarn in contrasting colors. This is also a good small project for using partial skeins in your stash.
One set each of size 2.5 and size 5 needles for preferred method of small circumference knitting, such as 9-inch circular needles, double-pointed needles or circular needles for the magic loop technique
Other basic notions including tapestry needles and stitch markers
Prerequisites:
*This is an advanced class — Designed for students with a good grasp on basic knitting techniques, but suitable for those who have never done colorwork knitting before. The skills students should already be comfortable with include:
Casting on and off
Knit and purl stitches, and working both knits and purls in the same row
Knitting in the round
About the instructor:
Julia Cardi is a knitter and crocheter based in Detroit. Her love for knitting began as a solitary hobby during the COVID-19 pandemic (the scarf of dubious quality she made from a kit as a nine-year-old notwithstanding), but what hooked her is the community fiber arts naturally creates, and the respite it provides from her day job.
