This 20-centime stamp originally issued for Ruanda-Urundi features a striking depiction of the African buffalo (Bubalus), rendered in earthy tones with a grassy wetland backdrop. Following Burundi’s independence in 1962, the stamp was overprinted “Royaume du Burundi” (“Kingdom of Burundi”) to serve as a transitional issue. Such overprints are highly sought after by collectors, representing the nation’s brief monarchical phase before becoming a republic. The original design was printed by Courvoisier S.A., known for its fine intaglio work.
