The back of this charming watercolor is dated, in graphite, 1804--which of course I forgot to photograph when I had it out of the frame, but it is easy to open and see. A sign of spring arriving 222 years ago! I can't resist a watercolor like this, and love the way both the straw of the nest and the weave of the rich yellow basket were invested with a great deal of attention. And then these love birds themselves, full of life and also quite relatable, I'd say--their beaks meeting, but she doesn't looks entirely glad to see him!
6" x 5" framed, under glass, with partial wooden back and hanging loop at top. Sight 4 7/8" x 3 7/8". I extricated the watercolor from an early 20th century frame with mat laid over its edges and placed it in this nice 19th century lemon gold one, which I think suits it very nicely. Some toning/scattered spotting as evident, as one would expect, but no tears, color strong, and better in hand; both watercolor and frame in good condition.
