More than thirty-five years ago, the United Nations General Assembly ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which sought to ensure that all children are free to play, express themselves, be safe from violence, have a quality of life, be protected, know their rights, and have access to education and health/services. Despite this long-standing treaty, however, many children remain marginalized.
In the Philippines alone, more than 3.5 million are considered out-of-school youth, and at least 17,600 children have suffered from violence and abuse in the past year. The book On Children: Perspectives from the Peripheries is SDRC's research contributions from various fields that seek to alleviate the children's burdens, whether they're from indigenous communities, street children, children in conflict zones, children affected by climate realities, and others left n the peripheries.
