This piece pulls from Sultanabad / Mahal weaving as it emerged in central Iran in the late 19th century. When Western dealers — Ziegler & Co. most famously — set up production in Arak in 1875 they pushed weavers toward larger-scale, more open medallion patterns suited to Victorian and Edwardian drawing rooms. The result was a less court-formal idiom than Kashan or Isfahan: broader spaces between motifs, simpler border bands, generous proportions.

That register reads differently on Light Gray than the rest of the cohort. The Kashan-register sibling is the canonical formal drawing-room piece. The Mughal sibling is ceremonial declaration. This Sultanabad register is the relaxed-elegant cousin — the version you put in a sun-room or a casual family living room where you want Persian-tradition vocabulary without the formal posture.

How it feels underfoot

1200 Reeds (1200 شانه) on premium cotton warp; density over 3,000,000 knots/m² (تراکم). Tight, even, machine-precise pile — not the inconsistent hand-knotted hand of an actual antique Sultanabad, but the engineered density that gives this cohort its underfoot consistency. Holds plane under furniture, wears evenly along traffic lines.

Available sizes

Stocked in the canonical cohort run: 3×6, 3×10, 5×7.5, 6.5×10, 8.2×11.5, and 10×13 ft. Sultanabad open-field designs are unusually scale-sensitive — strongly recommend 8.2×11.5 or 10×13. The open spacing that defines this register collapses into visual noise at smaller scales. Below 6.5×10, choose the Kashan-register Light Gray sibling instead.

Built for relaxed-elegant rooms, not formal ones. Pairs with:

• Wood: white oak, limed oak, weathered teak — the open Sultanabad field flatters lighter natural woods more than dark formal casegoods
• Upholstery: natural linen, ivory bouclé, soft-blue chambray — the rug's spaced palette breathes with similarly relaxed textiles
• Metal: aged brass, weathered iron — the unfussed register pairs naturally with patinated metal rather than polished
• Rooms: sun-rooms, family living rooms, casual dining, primary bedrooms with restrained casegoods, large open-plan great rooms

Best for · skip if

Best for: large rooms with open architecture — great rooms, family living, sun-rooms, primary bedrooms over 14 ft on a side. Sultanabad design needs floor space to read correctly; it's the cohort's most scale-dependent register.

Skip if the room is under 5×7.5 (too small for this register), if the brief is formal drawing-room (use the Kashan sibling), or if you want ceremonial declaration (use the Mughal sibling). This piece composes by what it leaves out — if you want pattern density, go elsewhere in the cohort.
