BBEがTalking Headsの楽曲を再解釈したトリビュート作『Naive Melodies』をリリース。

『Naive Melodies』は、Talking Headsの楽曲をブラック・ミュージックの視点から捉え直したコンピレーション。キュレーションを手がけたのは、BBEのDavid Bowieトリビュート『Modern Love』を監修したDrew McFadden。彼は本作で、Talking Headsのサウンドを支えていたアフロ・ディアスポラ由来のリズムやソウルの要素に光を当てている。

Talking Headsはニューウェイヴの代表的存在として語られるが、そのリズム感覚の背景にはFela Kutiのアフロビート、Parliamentのファンク、Al Greenのソウルといったブラック・ミュージックの影響があった。本作は、その土台となったグルーヴや音響的テクスチャーを前面に出し、楽曲を別の角度から描き直す試みだ。

参加アーティストには、Liv.e、Bilal、Rogê、Miguel Atwood-Ferguson、Aja Monet、Georgia Anne Muldrow、Theo Croker、Kenny Dope、Rosie Lowe、Pachyman、W.I.T.C.H.らが名を連ねる。アフロビート、ジャズ、ソウル、ファンク、ゴスペル、ダブ、エレクトロニカ、オーケストラル、ラテンまで幅広いスタイルが交差し、原曲の骨格にあったリズムの強さを改めて浮かび上がらせる。

単なるカヴァー集ではない。Talking Headsのカタログを、ブラック・ミュージックの革新性という文脈に置き直す内容だ。原曲に宿っていたポリリズムやグルーヴの構造を解体し、現代の感覚で再構築することで、文化的な対話としての意味を持たせている。

ソウルフルなヴォーカル、厚みのあるホーン、跳ねるベースライン、ダブ処理された空間処理など、各トラックはリズムを軸に展開。ヴァイナルで針を落とせば、重心の低いベースと生楽器の鳴りがダイレクトに伝わり、ダンスとスピリチュアルな感覚が同時に立ち上がる。
