This illumination from the Hours of Louis de Laval (c. 1490) depicts Christ being taken down from the cross with the Latin inscription, "Obsecro te, Domina sancta Maria, Mater Dei" which translates, "I beseech thee, holy Lady Mary, Mother of God" (the beginning of a medieval prayer to Our Lady). This work is attributed to the workshop of Jean Colombe, a prominent French illuminator of the late 15th century.
