The first great master and teacher of the hesychast life in modern times whose writings are known to us is the schema-monk Elder Basil. He belongs to the generation that preceded Sts. Makarios Notaras and Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain, the noted publishers of the Greek Philokalia, and was the elder of St. Paisy Velichkovsky who wrote and prepared translations for publication in Slavonic. What little we know about Elder Basil is interwoven with the life of his great disciple, St. Paisy, with the exception of a few bare facts sifted out by diligent scholars.
