Among my very favorite PA finds, and among my favorite finds ever--just look at these horses! So specifically and lovingly rendered in inlaid wood, with finely incised lines for their manes--I have to think these were two much loved particular horses, and that the box was made, perhaps by a husband for his wife, who loved these horses very much. (They also feel a bit like human surrogates, making a very handsome couple.) I'm not sure if the relatively shallow and octagonally shaped, velvet lined box had a particular function, but if it did it seems it would have been horse related, maybe holding a prize medal! Wonderful.

6 1/8" x 14 13/16" x 1 11/16" t. Beautiful condition, earlyish 20th c. I believe.
