The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), directed by Marcus Nispel and produced by Michael Bay, reimagines Tobe Hooper's 1974 masterpiece for a new generation. Set in rural Texas in the summer of 1973, it follows a group of friends traveling through the state who pick up a traumatized hitchhikerÑunwittingly setting in motion a nightmarish encounter with the sadistic Hewitt family. At the center is the hulking figure of Leatherface, whose chainsaw and skin mask make him a terrifying embodiment of inhuman brutality.
The remake dials up the grit and gore with grimy production design, oppressive atmosphere, and unrelenting violence. Jessica Biel leads the cast as Erin, a survivor fighting through the nightmare, while R. Lee Ermey steals scenes as the sadistic Sheriff Hoyt. Though divisive with critics, the film was a major box office success and helped launch a wave of 2000s horror remakes (The Amityville Horror, Friday the 13th). Its relentless tone and bleak realism set it apart from the campier sequels of the franchise, returning Leatherface to his status as a primal horror icon.
