Highland Nobility: Kenneth Sutherland, 3rd Lord Duffus (After Richard Waitt, c.1870)

A Magnificent Jacobite Portrait in Oil on Canvas

Subject & Medium

🎨 A captivating Victorian era 19th-century oil on canvas portrait depicting Kenneth Sutherland, 3rd Lord Duffus (d.1732) — a nobleman and ardent Jacobite of the early 18th century.
Painted circa 1870, this work is executed after the original by Richard Waitt, master painter of the Scottish Highlands.
The artist employs the warmth and depth of oil to achieve rich tonal harmony — from the deep crimson of the sitter’s coat and delicate lace cravat to the tartan stockings and silvery wig, each element capturing both realism and legend.

Composition & Technique

🖼️ Lord Duffus stands full-length in Highland attire, hand resting confidently upon his sword’s hilt — a symbol of martial pride and ancestral honour.
Beside him sits a noble Scottish deerhound, gaze lifted in loyal devotion, while a game bird lies in the foreground — emblems of fidelity, land, and lineage.

🌄 The storm-lit Highland landscape behind him merges portraiture with historical narrative, evoking the turbulent spirit of Jacobite Scotland.
Executed in the smooth, academic manner typical of Victorian homage pieces, the painter balances precise modeling of the figure with expressive treatment of sky and landscape.
The palette — a symphony of Highland greens, warm ochres, cool greys, and rich reds — enhances the sitter’s commanding presence.

This work stands as both a faithful tribute to Richard Waitt and a romantic Victorian reinterpretation of Scotland’s heroic past.

About Kenneth Sutherland, 3rd Lord Duffus (d.1732)

🏰 Lord Duffus inherited one of the Highlands’ most distinguished titles.
A steadfast supporter of the Stuart cause, he joined the Jacobite Rising of 1715, pledging allegiance to the exiled monarchy.
For this act of loyalty, his lands and title were forfeited, and he died in exile — a fate that later generations viewed with reverence and romantic nostalgia.

⚔️ To Victorians, he embodied the ideal of the Highland laird — courageous, loyal, and proud.
This portrait preserves not only his likeness, but also the enduring mythos of the lost Jacobite nobility.

About the Artist

👨🎨 Richard Waitt (active c.1708–1732) was a distinguished Scottish portraitist, celebrated for his clan portraits at Castle Grant, which remain invaluable records of early 18th-century Highland culture.
This painting, a late 19th-century work after Waitt, reflects the Victorian fascination with Scotland’s romantic and Jacobite heritage — a period when collectors sought to revive the visual grandeur of the Highlands.
