The String of Beads (Senecio herreianus) is a whimsical and eye-catching trailing succulent, adored for its cascading vines adorned with plump, bead-like leaves. Native to South Africa, the String of Beads thrives in bright spaces and requires minimal care—making it a favourite among succulent lovers and busy plant parents alike.

Its spherical leaves aren’t just charming—they help the plant retain water, making it particularly drought-tolerant. With the right conditions, this plant can even surprise you with tiny white flowers that have a subtle cinnamon scent.

Plant Care

Water every two weeks or when the soil is completely dry. The String of Beads is sensitive to overwatering—too much moisture can lead to root rot and mushy beads. In warmer months, it may require slightly more frequent watering, but always check the soil first. Let water drain out fully and never let the pot sit in excess water. Wrinkled or shriveled beads are a sign it’s time for a drink.

Sunlight

Thrives in bright, indirect light or filtered sunlight. 6 to 8 hours of light a day is ideal. It can tolerate some gentle direct sun, especially in the morning, but too much harsh light can scorch the beads. If indoors, place near a bright south or west-facing window.

Ambient

Prefers a warm environment with temperatures between 20°C - 28°C. It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures but must be protected from frost. Low humidity is usually fine, but make sure the space is well-ventilated and free from cold drafts.

Nutrients

Feed once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a succulent-specific fertilizer or a diluted all-purpose liquid fertilizer. For ease, Folikraft ready-to-use Indoor Plant Food is a great option. Avoid fertilizing in fall and winter when the plant is dormant.
