Kanamycin is an aminoglycoside antibioticum with bactericidal activity against many gram-negative bacteria. Aminoglycosides class antibiotics enter into sensitive bacteria via an active transport process. Inside the cell, aminoglycosides bind to the 30 S and to some extent to the 50 S -subunits of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis and generating errors in the transcription of the genetic code. Kanamycin is used as a selective agent in combination with the incorporation of the NPT II (AH3’) gene in plant tissue and microbial cells.
