Moscato For Grown-Ups

Tastes like: Lychee. Rose Water. Lemongrass. White Peach. Ginger Flower. Lime Peel. Turkish Delight. Zesty Citrus Finish.

This is one of those brilliantly bonkers aromatic whites that somehow manages to be wildly perfumed whilst still staying beautifully fresh and dangerously drinkable. Exotic, energetic and packed with personality — like Northern Italy accidentally took a holiday in the Adelaide Hills.

Protero Aromatico is made by Stephen and Fiona Pannell from their cool-climate Adelaide Hills vineyard near Gumeracha. Inspired by the leaner, fresher aromatic blends of Northern Italy, the 2023 vintage combines Gewürztraminer, Riesling and a tiny splash of Sauvignon Blanc.

Fermentation took place slowly over eight weeks after each grape variety was harvested separately and blended together in tank. The wine was bottled with just a touch of residual sugar, helping soften the naturally bright acidity and giving the palate a lovely textural roundness without ever feeling sweet.

There’s loads going on here — lychee, ginger, citrus blossom, rose oil, lemongrass and stone fruit — but it all stays beautifully balanced and fresh. Stephen Pannell himself describes it as “Moscato for grown-ups”, which feels pretty spot on. 

Absolutely glorious with spicy food, fragrant curries, Vietnamese dishes or giant sunny afternoon catch-ups that somehow roll deep into the evening.
