The Reef Butterflyfish (Chaetodon sedentarius), also known as the Spotfin Butterflyfish, is a bold and eye-catching species that brings classic butterflyfish beauty to larger saltwater aquariums. Its bright yellow body is marked with dark vertical bands, a distinctive black spot near the tail, and a noticeable black blotch on the dorsal fin, giving it a striking, high-contrast appearance.
Found throughout the Western Atlantic and Caribbean, the Reef Butterflyfish is an active swimmer that appreciates plenty of open space along with live rock for grazing and shelter. It has a generally peaceful temperament and does well with other calm, similarly sized fish, making it a solid choice for community fish-only or FOWLR systems.
Like most butterflyfish, this species is not reef safe, as it may nip at corals, anemones, and other sessile invertebrates. It adapts well to aquarium life when provided a varied diet that includes frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality prepared foods formulated for butterflyfish. A stable, well-maintained aquarium is key to long-term success.
Quick Facts:
If you’re looking for a larger, visually striking butterflyfish for a fish-only setup, the Reef Butterflyfish is a beautiful and engaging option that adds movement and classic reef-fish appeal to your aquarium.
