During the first 80 years of Australia's settlement, rascals, ruffians and rebels were transported to Sydney Cove. Sentenced for crimes ranging from stealing a yard of cloth to abducting a Quaker heiress, convicts were forced to wait on his Majesty's pleasure in the hell-hole prisons of England and then face the terrible sea voyage, fraught with danger, even before arriving at the notorious penal colony of Sydney. Clune has pieced together the stories of nine of these rogues - some ended their days as respectable, honoured citizens of Australia; others quietly worked out their sentences and returned to their homelands - and then there were the unrepentants.
