A High-Grade Survivor of Pre-War Hong Kong
Secure an exceptional piece of Asian colonial history with this 1936 Government of Hong Kong 1 Dollar note. Following the death of George V, this series was updated to feature the portrait of his successor, King George VI. Finding pre-WWII Hong Kong currency in this near-pristine condition is a rare feat, as many of these notes were lost or destroyed during the subsequent Japanese occupation.
Obverse (Front): Features a sharp, youthful portrait of King George VI on the right. The note maintains the iconic deep purple color palette and intricate "One Dollar" overprint in the center.
Reverse (Back): Showcases the sophisticated radial guilloche patterns and "Government of Hong Kong" branding typical of the high-security printing by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co.
Signatory: Signed by S. Caine, the Financial Secretary of the era.
Issuer: Government of Hong Kong
Pick Number: P-312
Date of Issue: ND (1936)
Serial Number: T368833
Grading: PMG 58 Choice About Uncirculated
Printer: Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. (BWC)
Collector's Note: A PMG 58 grade is tantalizingly close to "Gem" status. This note possesses original paper wave, sharp corners, and exceptional eye appeal. For the serious Hong Kong collector, this is a "Top Pop" candidate that serves as a bridge between the early silver-crisis issues and the post-war emergency notes.
