A charming pair of painted elbow chairs dating back to the English Regency era, exquisitely hand-painted to simulate exotic timber and ornamented with neoclassical festive ribbons and garlands, with Greek key (meander) border to seat rails.
England, circa 1800-1810.
Elegant and refined, the design of these chairs reflects the late Georgian fashion for lightweight and slender furniture, inspired by the findings at the archaeological excavations in Italy, popularised by the British designer Thomas Sheraton and the architects Adam brothers before him.
Very pretty chairs, comfortable, nicely drawn and well proportioned, these chairs will suit a traditional as well as an eclectic interior and will look even prettier with tastefully made squab cushions. Recently traditionally re-caned by hand.
