Proud brass plaque depicting naval American eagle ‘primus in pace’ and ballistic missile over sub over the globe.
USS George Washington (SSBN-598), commissioned on 30 December 1959, became the U.S. Navy’s first ballistic missile submarine, achieving the first submerged Polaris missile launch on 20 July 1960 . She conducted decades of strategic deterrent patrols from bases such as Groton, Holy Loch, and Pearl Harbour . In April 1981, she collided with the Japanese freighter Nissho Maru—sinking it with minimal damage to herself . Following SALT II treaty mandates, her missiles were removed, she was converted for attack submarine duty briefly, then decommissioned on 24 January 1985; her sail is now displayed at the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, CT .
