The year was 1921.  Fernand Petiot was tending bar at Harry's, a storied Paris watering hole frequented by the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway.  Some say the Bloody Mary was invented especially for Hemingway, who one “morning-after”stopped by Harry's in search of a hangover remedy.  It was O. O. McEntyre, a New York newspaperman, who founded a group called the International Bar Flies, an organization for those serious drinkers.  Harry's became a magnet for Americans who traveled to Paris for drinks, including Petiot’s "eye opener" called the Bloody Mary.
