I think this drawing is FANTASTIC! I had the work of Pearl Blauvelt on my mind when I spotted it--sold to me by a rare book seller who knew nothing about it--and the intensity and changing directionality of the pencil lines animating every inch of the horse, and rider, too, reminded me of some of Blauvelt's drawings. I don't believe it is, as Blauvelt’s faces were quite different, but this is definitely of a different ilk than a schoolgirl horse drawing: extremely assured, quite resolved, and it just tells you that it is something special. And while done on lined paper, the paper is larger than notebook paper---11 1/8" x 10 3/4" visible here--which adds to a feeling of gravitas. Really wonderful, and all the more striking in person.

Framed: 16 3/4" x 14 1/4". Visible drawing: 11 1/8" x 10 3/4".  1930s-40s I would think. Sold as found in its original frame, with the label of The Old Print Shop, New York, 150 Lexington Ave. (established in 1898 and still operating) on the back. I have not taken it out of the frame as I sort of hate messing with things and would rather keep it safe but could do if needed. The drawing shows a few spots of toning and two old horizontal fold lines with a little tearing along them, but appears to have been stabilized by the framer long ago and is in otherwise very good condition, reading crisply and boldly. The frame shows wear and some losses, as pictured. There is a bit of glare caught in some photos.
