"Johnny & I went here… March 1949". We don't know who Johnny and his companion were but we know from the hand-written message and the items circled on the interior of this menu what they ate and drank (two hamburgers, a Pepsi-Cola and a Milk Shake) at Waddle's flagship restaurant at Jantzen Beach, Portland. This is one of the lovely things about vintage menus – they were kept to mark a first date or other important occasion - and that's why we can enjoy the amazing graphics and illustrations today. Waddle's opened in 1945 and was designed by the celebrated architect Pietro Belluschi, a pioneer in the development of American modern architecture. A giant Eat Now sign sat on top of the building as well as a reader board which said "Bees humm cause they don't know the words." The family-owned business had three locations in the Portland area. The Jantzen Beach restaurant was the last to close in 2004 and is now a Hooters Bar and Grill.
