• The Stone: Millions of years of history. Onyx forms when silica-rich water deposits layer after layer of chalcedony inside ancient rock, building up the deep, uniform black over geological time. These beads are matte finished, smooth and unpolished for a subdued, tactile feel. Set with a vermeil gold logo at the center.
• History: Onyx has been mined since at least the 5th century BC in Egypt and Babylon. Roman Emperor Augustus wore an onyx signet ring. Pliny the Elder dedicated entire sections of his encyclopedia to the stone, documenting its many varieties from India. Roman generals wore engraved onyx talismans into battle, believing the stone gave them fearlessness and focus. The Romans and Greeks carved it into cameos and intaglios, using its layered structure to create detailed portraits of gods and emperors. In the Victorian era, Queen Victoria wore onyx mourning jewelry after the death of her daughter, and the stone became a symbol of dignified strength across Europe.
• The Belief: In modern crystal practice, black onyx is a root chakra stone, associated with grounding, protection, and emotional control under pressure. In ancient India and Persia, onyx was considered a protector against evil. In China, it was carved into amulets for strength and stability. This stone has been worn by emperors, generals, and queens for the same reason: it absorbs what you do not need and holds what you do.
• Vermeil Gold: The gold elements are crafted from heavy vermeil. This is a solid sterling silver base coated in 3.5 microns of pure 24kt gold, making it about seven times thicker than standard gold plating. Because we use pure 24kt gold over silver instead of a thin layer over brass, the color is richer and highly durable. If it wears over time, it reveals solid silver beneath, developing character rather than looking cheap. Vermeil has been the standard for premium jewelry since 18th century France.
