In 1874 with Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Degas and Berthe Morisot, he founded a society of painters, artists and sculptors and took part in the first three exhibitions of the new Impressionists. His great fame and popularity came after his death. Sisley always began his paintings with the sky, which might occupy most of the canvas, with its expanse of blue crossed by a filmy skein of ragged clouds leading our gaze towards the distant horizon, almost to infinity.
