On an incredibly hot day in August I hiked up the Falling Waters Trail to paint some of the falls. After a few hours, my fingers became so cold they could hardly move. The cool of the stream and shady glen where I was painting was far chillier than the valley below. I retreated for the afternoon to a spot along the Gale River in Franconia where the blazing sun was unbearable, but the shade along the river was just right. The atmosphere made it easy to spend the rest of the day happily painting the rocks and sparkling water along the banks of this slow river.
