This 1:72 diecast model of Gloster Meteor F.8 WF714 commemorates one of the RAF’s most significant early jet fighters and the most successful variant of the legendary Meteor series. As the first operational jet aircraft to serve with the Royal Air Force—and the only Allied jet to see combat in WWII—the Meteor marked a new era in aerial warfare. Entering service in 1944, early Meteors joined piston-engine fighters to help intercept German V-1 flying bombs.
The F.8 variant, introduced in 1948, became the RAF’s principal single-seat day interceptor from 1950 to 1955. Powered by updated Rolls-Royce Derwent engines, it featured a redesigned fuselage, improved cockpit with ejection seat, and was armed with four 20mm nose-mounted cannons. WF714 was operated by No. 500 (County of Kent) Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force, based at RAF West Malling, which transitioned from the F.3 and F.4 to the F.8 in 1952. WF714 suffered a landing accident while deployed at summer camp in Malta in 1953. No. 500 Squadron was disbanded shortly after, on 10 March 1953, ahead of the wider disbandment of RAuxAF flying squadrons in 1957.
This model comes prebuilt and includes display accessories and a stand, making it a perfect piece for collectors of early jet aviation and post-war RAF aircraft.
