38th Academy Awards Show - ABC

RARE Vintage ABC One Sheet Poster, 1966

The 38th Annual Academy Awards Show one sheet poster, promoting the 1966 Oscar broadcast on ABC, is an extermely Rare peice of entertainment history and visually striking artifact that stands out in the world of entertainment collectibles.

What makes this piece so unique is that it wasn’t created to promote a film, but rather the live television broadcast of Hollywood’s most glamorous night—a virtually unheard-of use for the one sheet format. Its bold purple background, sharp white traffic-stopping typography, and prominent gold Oscar statuette exude mid-century modern elegance, while the mention of "IN COLOR" emphasizes the historical shift as the show was televised in color for one of the first times. Very few of these posters were printed, and even fewer survived, making it a scarce treasure. For collectors of pop culture, television history, or Oscar memorabilia, this poster is not just rare—it’s a vivid snapshot of the moment the Academy Awards entered the modern media age.

You're back in your childhood, watching TV with the family.  Its a Monday evening in 1966 and on TV is the first Academy Awards in Color, hosted by Bob Hope.   THIS is the poster that was used to promote that historic TV event in 1966.

BIO:

The 38th Academy Awards, honoring the best in film for 1965, were held on April 18, 1966, at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, California. They were hosted by Bob Hope.

The ceremony was broadcast on the ABC network and was the first to be broadcast live in color.

The two most nominated films were The Sound of Music and Doctor Zhivago, each with ten nominations and five wins. The winner of Best Picture was 20th Century Fox's and Robert Wise's The Sound of Music, adapted from the Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway musical. Both movies are in the top 10 inflation-adjusted commercially successful films ever made and both would appear 33 years later on the American Film Institute list of the greatest American films of the twentieth century.   Lee Marvin won Best Actor.

The Sound of Music was the first Best Picture winner without a screenwriting nomination since Hamlet; it would be the last until Titanic at the 70th Academy Awards. Othello became the third film (of four to date) to receive four acting nominations without one for Best Picture. William Wyler received the last of his record twelve Best Director nominations for The Collector.

Lynda Bird Johnson, daughter of President Lyndon B. Johnson, attended the Academy Awards presentation and was escorted by actor George Hamilton.
