Grand Seiko SBGY002 Watch Review

The Grand Seiko SBGY002 utilizes Spring Drive technology, which generates energy for the watch by combining it with a regulator, delivering precision when the watch tells time. A Spring Drive does not tick; it uses a smooth moving second hand that sweeps across the watch face in uninterrupted movements. The smooth mechanisms allow the Spring Drive technology to work well by combining quartz and mechanical watchmaking, creating a superior hybrid of the two.

The Grand Seiko SBGY002 does not have a date window or a power reserve indicator, but it does feature with a snowflake dial. This is a surface on the watch face that creates slopes, resembling the snowy Shinshu region of Japan. Despite the fact there is no power reserve on the watch itself, the watch will hold power for about three days.

The Grand Seiko SBGY002 has an 18K gold case with dual-curved sapphire crystal glass and an anti-reflective coating on the inner surface. The case has a diameter of 38.5mm and a thickness of 10.2mm. It also has the trademark Grand Seiko lion emblem on the back of the case, in addition to screws in case the casing needs to be opened.

The band is made of crocodile leather and has a three-fold clasp with a push button release. This watch is considered splash resistant, but you would not want to get it too wet, lest you ruin the crocodile band. It weighs 92 grams and has magnetic resistance.

The band is smooth and fits flat against the wrist. This allows the watch to easily be hidden under a shirt cuff. Because of the design between the case band and lugs, there is a visual illusion that the case is larger than it truly is. This is great because it means that there should be no worry that the watch is too small.
