PRAJNA REMEDIES UMA KAJAL

Kajal/Khol, traditional eyeliner is made in literally hundreds of ways utilizing any number of hundreds of  various ingredients!  It has such a fascinating history over time, and there is definitely a few PhDs in that road to discovery!  I know about 8 techniques to make Kajal ranging from the Egyptian to deep Ayurvedic formulas! This Kajal, which I call Uma Kajal because it is quite strong herbal medicine, as opposed to the simple Kajal of just an oil and lamp black, is a blend of techniques from Ayurveda in the context of a Benarsi style Kajal. 

First you make medicated ghee which is in itself a serious endeavor if you endeavor to do it ‘right!’  It can take days to are medicated Ghee.  Then you make medicated wicks, also very time consuming, and also can take days.  Then from these two you make medicated soot, or herbalized lamp black!  It can take 5 days to make enough soot for 30-40 vials of Kajal.

MEDICATED SOOT

1) Make medicated ghee (Brahmi, Tulsi, Sandalwood, Triphala, Euphrasia) ‘using various tricks and techniques’

2) Make medicated wicks (Brahmi, Tulsi, Sandalwood, Triphala, Euphrasia) ‘using various tricks and techniques’

3) Burn the ghee with the wicks and catch the soot on Silver platters (as in the metal silver) ‘using various tricks and techniques’

4) Collect the Soot and store in glass 

ULTRAFINE HERBS & CAMPHOR

So these herbs are basically going in your eyes and so the powder has to be beyond beyond fine and that takes time pounding and grinding and sifting through 3 or 4 layers of quite tight cotton cloth, like the cotton cloth a shirt is made out of as well as ‘using various tricks and techniques.’ Just to make the fine powder can take days.

ULTRAFINE CAMPHOR

Ayurveda uses camphor in Kajal to make the eyes burn a little as it is that burning that activates the Kajal to optimize vision and tissue.  My Kajal for the market has half the camphor that I put into private blends so you will feel a little camphor burn and it will not last more than a minute or so. So the camphor also needs to be ultra fine which is challenging as the more you grind it the more clumpy and less-fine it is! But it is possible ‘using various tricks and techniques.’  

Also, 99.5% of the camphor used these days in Ayurveda is simply man made chemical menthol crystalized and should never be used as a medicine!  I use high quality Borneo Camphor from large trees and it is majical! 

ULTRAFINE PEARLS, PEARL BHASMA, and CONCH BHASMA

The Bhasmas are high quality Ayurvedic Bhasmas which are part of Ayurvedic Alchemy called Rasa Shastra!  You have to get the right pearls and when you do, it can be a real grind!  

MORE MEDICATED GHEE

Make a lot of the medicated ghee as you will need a lot for the formula! 

MAKE MEDICATED ROSE WATER

Basically just make an herbal tea but using rose water as the ‘water’ and ‘using various tricks and techniques.’  Make Brahmi, Tulsi, Rose, Sandalwood, Triphala, Euphrasia, Pearl tea in rose hydrosol

MAKE the KAJAL

1) Combine everything in the standard sequence and grind the 5 ingredients into Kajal with a Kharal, a yoni shaped Ayurvedic mortar and pestle, sort of.  

2) Grind the first five ingredients until you have a thick rich semi-solid ‘proto Kajal’

3) Once that pre-Kajal is made then you keep pouring cups of your Medicated Rose Water into the Kharal and grind the blend until the water is gone ‘using various tricks and techniques’ and take even more days!  Yikes. Make cold infusion of herbs into Rose hydrosol and then grind them into a kharal

4) Even grinding, always always by hand, takes a while!
