Woman represents "the mercury in the thermometer of the race. Her status shows to what degree it has risen out of barbarism” - Vida Goldstein.

ACTIVIST, SUFFRAGIST, FEMINIST

From a young age, Vida was surrounded by a family who was deeply involved in church and social work, inspiring her own passion for making a difference. Following in her Suffragist mother's footsteps, a young Vida started campaigning for women's rights and women's right to vote*.  Despite facing challenges and opposition throughout her life, Vida never wavered in her commitment to fighting for women's rights, equal pay and social reform. Through her persistence and determination, she made history as the first woman to run for parliament, paving the way for future generations. Vida's legacy continues to inspire and empower women today, as she is remembered as a trailblazer and champion for equality.

A fun fact about Vida: The first Australian to be invited into the Oval Room at the White House where she met with Mr Roosevelt. Vida attended the International Woman Suffrage Conference, representing Australia and giving evidence before a committee of the US Congress in favour of female suffrage.

*Note: Vida was a woman of her time and her campaigning for women's rights was not inclusive of First Nations Australians. Her work, however, paved the way for future generations to campaign for the right to vote for every one in Australia.

The High Tees VIDA Design has been inspired by 1900s posters and graphic design. Drawing upon influences of suffragette magazines, female artists of the time, Jess has used a variety of medium in this artwork. Collage, paint, marker, pen, pencil and a final jooj with digital art, this design is reminiscent of iconic 1900s art, heroing VIDA with a modern slant.
