Old Potrero Whiskey is made from 100% rye and aims to re-create the style of whiskey that would have been distilled in the 18th century. The name is taken from the location of the distillery which is Old Potrero Hill, San Francisco. They use handmade barrels that are lightly toasted but not charred. This imparts a delightfully subtle flavour to this blend of whiskey aged between two and half years that can't be called "whiskey" on these shores as it was aged for less than three years (it spends two and a half years in new and old lightly toasted, as opposed to charred, barrels).
Plenty of oak and spice. Dried herbs, pepper, pencil shavings and sticking plasters.
Old Potrero is an attempt to recreate the original whiskey of America, and marks the return of pot-distilled whiskey in the United States. It’s distilled in a small copper pot still at the Hotaling & Co. Distillery on San Francisco’s Potrero Hill from a mash of 100% rye malt, with rye being the grain of choice for America’s first distillers.
