VINTAGE PIE BIRD

WONDERFUL and collectible vintage pottery black bird with open  beak pie bird. Placed in the center of the pie, the bird has a hole in the beak to allow steam to vent from pies.

Also known as a crust support or steam vent to allow hot steam to be released while a pie is cooking to avoid the filling seeping out under pressure. These pie birds were very popular and a 'must have' in a good kitchen.

The charming handpainted funnel is in very nice condition,  displays beautifully.
