This generally easy piece is designed to begin an entertainments contest programme.

At the start, only four players are on the stage. One timpani player, and three basses out in front as soloists: two E flat and one B flat. The timpanist sets the tempo throughout, as the conductor does not arrive until eight bars from the end. Other players enter in groups, all keeping to the slow march tempo. Back row cornets, trombones and the fourth bass player form the first group.
Horns, baritones and euphoniums are the second. The flugel and the drum kit player form the third, and the solo cornets (scored in three parts) the fourth.
