Neyaguala Cichlid (Macaw Cichlid) Overview
Also known as the Macaw cichlid, the Neyaguala cichlid (Hypsophrys nicaraguensis) is a striking and sought-after species from Central America. Renowned for their vibrant coloration and relatively peaceful demeanor compared to other large cichlids, they are a favorite among aquarists. However, they can become territorial, especially during breeding periods.

Appearance & Coloration

Neyaguala cichlids are admired for their vivid coloration, which includes shades of yellow, red, and blue.

• Males typically display a yellowish-orange body and may develop a noticeable nuchal hump as they mature.

• Females tend to exhibit brighter blue and red tones and are often more colorful overall.

• Spangling: Males may show attractive spangling or spots on their dorsal and caudal fins, a feature less common in females.

Size

• Males: Up to 9–10 inches (23–25 cm) in length

• Females: Typically around 7 inches (18 cm)

Care Requirements

• Temperament: Generally peaceful for their size but territorial during breeding.

• Tank Size: A spacious aquarium is essential—at least 400 liters (100 gallons) is recommended.

• Water Quality: Sensitive to poor conditions—regular water changes are necessary to maintain optimal health.

• Tank Mates: Can coexist with other peaceful cichlids, tetras, or bottom-dwelling catfish if the tank is large and well-structured.
