By the time frost is on the truck windshield, the right coat has already earned its place by the door. It rides to the river bottom, walks behind the dog, stands at the edge of the field, and takes the ride home with briars on the canvas and birds in the back. The Sportsman's Field Coat is built for that kind of use.
The Sportsman's Field Coat takes its shape from the canvas hunting coat that hung in every American sportsman's closet from the early 1900s through the 1960s. One coat. Heavy enough for weather, cut for the gun mount, with the pockets and pouches a man needed to walk in, shoot, carry out, and ride home. As hunting fractured into specialties, the one-coat tradition went out of the catalog. This is its return. Heavy canvas. Corduroy where the body meets the weather. Shell storage where the hand naturally falls. A back game pouch built for the walk out. The coat for the man who still has a reason to wear one.
The shell is 10.25 oz, 100% sanforized cotton canvas, the kind that wears in, not down. A corduroy collar and corduroy sleeve cuffs take the rub at the neck and wrist. The storm-flap button front closes clean against weather, with a snap-flap chest pocket set high for small essentials.
The angled hip pockets do two jobs. On the outside, they cover the hand-warmer openings. Behind them, internal shell holders keep ammunition where a sportsman reaches without looking. A snap-button back belt shapes the lower waist, while the drawstring-cinched hem lets the coat close down when the wind comes across the field.
At the back, a PU-lined game pouch with zippers is built for birds, brush, and the kind of mess that should be hosed down, not worried over.
The canvas will soften. The corduroy will show the years. A son will know this coat by the hook it hangs on.
