Antique autographed photo of Mae Murray, silent film star & dancer of the 1920s. This is a promotional photo from The Armed Bride, a silent movie from 1925 that is now lost. Joseph von Sternberg was initially hired to direct, but found Murray impossible to work with. She plays a cabaret dancer, drawing on her own background in the Ziegfeld Follies. The vibe here definitely reminds one of Von Sternberg’s later, more famous collaborations with Marlene Dietrich. I love the set that looks like she’s in the open jaws of a fanged beast!
Comes in its original envelope. I couldn’t find a date, but it looks like the stamp is from 1938. This came from the estate of a local principal who was an avid collector of autographed photos and books, mostly from the 1930s-1940s.
