Dzi beads are ancient beads from Tibet, similar to etched carnelian beads. They are crafted by burning natural dyes onto agate to create intricate patterns. These beads are believed to have been made between the 1st and 6th centuries AD. However, the exact composition of the dyes used remains a mystery, adding to the enigmatic allure of these antique beads. While primarily found in Tibet, they are also discovered in regions like Bhutan and Ladakh in the Himalayas. Each pattern holds a different significance, with the "eye" motif being particularly prized for its excellent condition and popularity.
In Tibetan culture, Dzi beads are considered talismans of wealth and prosperity, passed down through generations and highly valued as adornments. Recently, their popularity has surged in China, where they are known as "Tian Zhu" (天珠). Numerous replicas crafted using similar techniques are prevalent; however, authentic ancient Dzi beads remain exceptionally rare and sought after.
Within the category of Dzi beads, those featuring stripe patterns rather than eye motifs are referred to as Chongzi or "line beads" (線珠).
