Secondary Barrel: Terrapin Beer Company Tiramisu-Hoo Milk Stout
Richland Rum is the only single-estate rum in the U.S. Richland grows their own sugarcane. They process it into cane syrup in-house. The cane syrup is then fermented and distilled all in downtown Richland, GA. It is a wonderful Agricole-style rum and probably one of my favorite craft spirits.
Analogous to the ‘Exchange’ program with Chateau Elan, after aging Richland Rum for approximately three to four years, the contents of select casks are transferred temporarily to new barrels. The emptied casks are then used by the Terrapin Brewing Company in Athens, GA to age their “TiramisuHoo” Imperial Milk Stout for about one year. After the beer has been bottled, the barrels are returned to the Distillery in Richland, where the Rum they originally held is placed back into them. After approximately 18 months, and after having picked up notes of vanilla, chocolate, sweet milk, and nutmeg, the rum is considered mature and is bottled.
Tasting Notes: Velvet tiramisu surrounded by aromas of hops, tobacco and dark coffee caress the nose. The palate is complex and adds black walnut, raisins, dates, cashew, vanilla and even hits of curry. The long finish has ginger, fine leather, peat and creamy chocolate components.
