Additional Details: “Land I” by George Nama, hand-colored linoleum cut from the celebrated Catalogue of Monuments portfolio. Printed at Monument Press on fine Arches Cover stock, this striking limited edition work combines minimalist abstraction with symbolic monumentality, reflecting Nama’s lifelong fascination with ancient civilizations, ritual objects, and archetypal forms. The composition presents a tightly coiled black organic structure intersected by geometric elements and barbed linear forms, creating an image that feels simultaneously industrial, tribal, and ceremonial. Accents of pale blue and small touches of red animate the otherwise restrained palette, emphasizing the sculptural presence of the form against the open white background. The bold contrasts and carved textures inherent to the linoleum cut process give the work a tactile, almost architectural quality. Only 100 portfolios of Catalogue of Monuments were produced. While the complete portfolios were numbered and signed in the colophon, the individual print itself was issued unsigned and unnumbered, exactly as published. This method of presentation was common for important portfolio editions of the period. George Nama became widely recognized for his sculptural and graphic works inspired by mythology, archaeology, and the human figure. His imagery often evokes ancient totems, ceremonial objects, and timeless symbolic structures, placing his work in dialogue with modernist abstraction as well as primitive and classical art traditions. A compelling example of the pre-digital printmaking era, where hand-crafted linoleum cuts and fine paper production created richly textured works with strong physical presence and enduring visual impact. Framing available upon request.
