Heuchera 'Midnight Rose' is a show-stopping perennial that looks like a handful of pink confetti was tossed onto a midnight sky. A sport of the famous 'Obsidian', this award-winning variety is prized for its dramatic, burnished black-purple leaves that are heavily dappled with vibrant hot pink spots. As the season progresses, these spots undergo a beautiful transformation, expanding and lightening to a soft creamy-white, providing a shifting "sparkle" in the garden. Its tidy, mounding habit and glossy foliage make it one of the most sophisticated and "gothic" choices for high-contrast landscaping. In early summer, slender dark stems produce dainty sprays of creamy-white flowers that float above the foliage like tiny stars.
Foliage: Glossy, near-black purple leaves with "electric" hot pink speckles that fade to cream as they age.
Flowers: Inconspicuous but charming creamy-white bells on dark wiry stems in early summer.
Light: Partial Shade is ideal. It can handle more sun than 'Lime Marmalade', but afternoon shade is recommended in hot climates to prevent leaf scorch.
Growth Habit: Compact, dense mound; grows 10–12" tall (up to 24" when in bloom) and 16–18" wide.
Hardiness: USDA Zones 4–9.
Landscape Use: An exceptional "filler" for mixed containers, stunning when massed as a groundcover, or used as a bold focal point in rock gardens.
Pro Tip: To maintain the most vibrant pink spotting, provide "bright shade"—too much deep shade may cause the purple to look duller. Like most Heucheras, it is susceptible to "frost heaving" in winter (where the roots are pushed out of the soil); applying a 2-3 inch layer of mulch in late fall helps protect the crown. It creates an incredible visual "pop" when planted alongside silver-foliage plants like Athyrium (Japanese Painted Fern) or chartreuse companions like 'Lime Marmalade'.
