A very scarce work by Irish / Scottish Prelate, John Maxwell [d.1647]. He published his now infamous "Sacrosancta Regum Majestas, Or, the Sacred Prerogative of Christian Kings" in 1644; Rutherford's Lex Rex was written in response and the present work, again by Maxwell, followed.

The debate of the connectivity between Cross and Crown, between religious liberty and the State happening in Scotland bubbled up again, with the same arguments, during the American Revolution, where Scottish Presbyterian divines, from the pulpit, freshly articulated the arguments of the Covenanters in the 17th century, and, in some ways, those of Roger Williams, etc.,

An important historical work.

Maxwell, John. The Burthen of Issachar: Or, the Tyrannicall Power and Practices of the Presbyteriall Government in Scotland; In their I. Parochiall Session. II. Presbyterie. III. Provinciall Synods. IV. Generall Assembly. With, The Articles of Presbyterian Faith Incosistent with the Monarchie. Whereby it is Evident, that Presbyteriall Fingers are Heavier than Episcopall Loynes; these Correcting with a Rod, Those with a Scorpion. And therefore it is not the Kingdome and Government of Jesus Christ, whose Yoake is easie, his Burthen light, and his Scepter a Scepter of Righteousnessse. Printed in the Yeare, 1646. 56pp.

Professionally removed from a larger sammelband of historical works and appropriately preserved in archival wraps. Some light stains at margin; else fine.
