Psyllium seeds for horses

Psyllium seeds are suitable for sand removal from the horse's gut. Psyllium seed adds abundant soluble fibre to the diet and is used especially when the overall diet is also considered from the perspective of gut function.

The soluble fibre in psyllium binds moisture and forms a mass that travels through the gut along with the feed. Fibre-rich psyllium increases intestinal peristalsis and brings any accumulated soil material out of the gut in a gentle and natural way.
This is why psyllium has become an established part of the diet for horses kept in sand paddocks and horses that ingest sand.

Suitable for horses that eat sand, horses where sand accumulates in the gut, or horses where a lack of fibre is reflected in digestive function.

Dosage:

Sand removal: 1 g / kg body weight / day for 5–7 days (only under veterinary supervision/recommendation or according to veterinary instructions).

Gut function maintenance for a 500 kg horse: 100 g per day, for a maximum of 30 days. Soak thoroughly and mix into the regular feed.

1 dl weighs: 65 g

NOTE! This product swells considerably — it absorbs approximately 40 times its own weight in water. During a psyllium course, ensure the horse has adequate water intake and monitor the horse's condition.

The daily dosage can be divided into several feedings.

Not for continuous use. A 5–7 day course can be repeated once a month, with a 3-week break in between.

With continuous use, the gut microbes adapt to digesting psyllium and the sand removal effect diminishes.

Tip:

During the breaks, use a small amount (1 dl) of chia, so that small amounts of sand are continuously carried out and the sand does not compact into a dense, thick layer in the gut.

You can test the sand situation in the gut by placing the horse's manure into, for example, a rubber glove and leaving it overnight. If sand settles to the bottom of the glove, it is advisable to continue the course. The only way to be certain about the sand situation is to have an X-ray taken of the horse's abdomen.

When using psyllium products on your own (without a veterinary prescription), always follow the instructions on the package. Do not exceed the dosage without veterinary advice!
